What is asynchronous development?

3 min readUpdated October 3, 2026

Asynchronous development means a child's abilities develop out of step with each other, for example reasoning far ahead of their age while emotional or motor skills are typical for their age (or behind). The term is often used about gifted children, but uneven development is common in many children.

Key takeaways

AreaWhat unevenness can look like
Thinking vs. feelingsComplex questions about the world, but big meltdowns over small things
Ideas vs. handsElaborate plans, frustration when the drawing or model doesn't match
Reasoning vs. socialPrefers older children or adults, finds peers hard to relate to

Respond to the age they are emotionally, and challenge the age they are intellectually. Both can be true at once.
